People asked me to post the steps I use to re-encode a Fraps video into a reasonably sized AVI. As per request:

After capturing a wow video via Fraps, you have a massive file.. usually 1-3 gigs. To encode it to a compressed usable AVI, here are the steps I use:

I open VirtualDubMod (from gordian knot package off doom9.org)

File -> open Video File wow-blahblah
Streams tab -> Stream List to bring up audio stream list box
right click the audio stream and choose Full Processing
right click audio stream again choose Compression
--> choose Lame MP3 codec
--> choose 44,100 stereo MP3 (lowest that does not require re-sampling)

Over to Video tab choose Fast Recompression
Video tab again click "Compression"
--> select XVID codec at the bottom
--> select Configure on the right
--> --> select "1 pass - quality"
--> --> set quality to 88 in "Advanced"

now do File -> Save As
put in some filename

and it should take anywhere from 2-15 minutes to re-code the video into a compressed XVID avi.

You'll need all the codecs installed that I mentioned, of course.. XVid, LAME Mp3 Codec, etc. They're all available in the rip-pack from doom9.org as well.

You can play with the quality vs. file size too. Quality at 88 is pretty nice, but perhaps a bit big in the file size department for some. I've done 77, but that renders most text unreadable or near-unreadable. If you want to be advanced (beyond the scope of this document), you can do 2-pass encoding.. but that takes a lot more effort and time, and is probably not worth it on a wow video.

More likely he probably has an older.

I normally open the video, then File save as, then select the codec, should be the button at the bottom (I think), and choose xvid. Then there's a configure button. You should have the options there.
